Easy Tips For Cleaning Shower Doors

Posted on

When you have glass shower doors or custom shower enclosures, you run the risk of that pesky soap scum constantly donning the shower doors.  It looks dirty after a couple of showers and will eventually be close to impossible to remove.  Follow these simple tips to removing the soap scum from your glass shower doors, and keep it off for longer periods of time.

Supplies Needed

There are more products to purchase than just a shower cleaner, but these will last longer and they will remove the soap scum more easily than other products.  Here's what you'll need:

  • Non-scratch sponge
  • Microfiber towel
  • Baking soda
  • White vinegar
  • Water repellant

Make a Paste

Start by making a paste with your baking soda and vinegar.  This mixture will bubble up at first, but wait for this to settle down, and then mix it up, creating a loose paste.  Depending on your shower door size, you'll need about a cup or two of this mixture.  It is best to make it in a bowl or something that you can dip your sponge into easily.

Apply it to Your Shower Doors

Take your soft sponge and gently scoop up this mixture and apply it all over your shower doors.  Rub it around in circles or side to side, but make sure that the door gets completely covered with the mixture.  Now you are ready to let the baking soda and vinegar do its job.  Wait for about 15 to 20 minutes while it naturally cleans your door.

Rinse

Make sure that you have adequately rinsed out your sponge.  Then rinse the mixture off of the glass by wiping over it several times with the wet sponge.  If needed, you can spray the doors to remove all of the baking soda.  If you have one, a window squeegee will help to eliminate all the graininess from the baking soda after you've rinsed.

Preventative

It is a good idea to try to prevent soap scum before it starts.  Spray water repellant, commonly found in the automotive section of your store, all over the shower door.  Gently wipe this around with a microfiber towel until the door is completely coated.  Let it dry before showering.  The water repellant will allow the majority of the soap scum to slide off the shower door with the water.

This whole process is easier and will greatly increase the time between cleanings, as the soap scum will take longer to build up. Glass door companies like Enterprise Glass Co Inc. can also provide advice, should you need more.
