Should You Choose French Doors Over Sliding Doors For Your Patio?

Posted on

If you are looking for ways to modernize your home and add value at the same time, consider replacing your sliding patio doors with French doors. In addition to updating your home's appearance, the doors bring other conveniences and perks.

Energy Efficiency

In the past, there was some question as to whether or not French doors could offer energy efficiency. Today's doors are different though. Most French doors are outfitted with fiberglass that has a high energy efficiency rating. You can add to your energy savings by opting for a door that is double paned.

The doors are also fitted with seals that help to limit the air getting in and out of your home. On the other hand, sliding doors traditionally just have metal, which does not offer the same tight seal.

Functionality

The argument for sliding glass doors used to be that they offered better functionality than French doors. This is not necessarily true anymore. French doors can be fully opened, which gives you access to the entire range of the space. By contrast, sliding doors are limited in the space they offer. The space needed for the doors to move along its tracks takes away from the space offered. As a result, you could have trouble moving larger items in and out of the doors.

In addition to the space issue, sliding glass doors can start to stick over time. This can make it difficult to open and close them as needed. By contrast, French doors swing open and close with ease.

Safety

Sliding doors are easy for people to breach. Someone wanting to get into your home only need to pop the doors off their track with simple tools. In fact, the entire panel can be removed easily.

French doors are more difficult to gain entry. The doors usually are fitted with at least two locks. The lock at the top of the door and a deadbolt help to keep burglars out of your home. If you want, you can even add an additional locking mechanism to add to the security of your home. The doors also usually have thicker glass than sliding doors, which means the chances of someone kicking through the glass is very slim.

Ultimately, the decision regarding your patio doors is up to you. However, it is worth consulting with a professional about which doors are best for your home. Remember, the appearance of the doors is just one component. For information about patio glass door repair, click here.
