How To Repair A Small Chip In Your Windshield

Posted on

Cracks and chips in your windshield can happen anytime. They can obstruct your view, which can make driving unsafe. Cracks and chips can happen from rocks or other objects that go airborne from other vehicles and hit your windshield. Following too closely to the vehicle in front of you can be the problem, but sometimes it just happens. You can repair small chips in your windshield with a glass repair kit, but for larger cracks and chips, you may want to leave it to a professional. See below for instructions on how to use a glass repair kit to repair a small chip.

  1. Clean The Area. Clean out the chip using a razor blade. You'll need to remove any loose pieces of glass inside of the chipped area. You'll also need to clean the area around the damaged glass, so use your favorite glass cleaner and a soft microfiber cloth to clean it.
  2. Place The Suction Tool In Place. Your repair kit should have come with a suction tool. Place the suction tool in place, so the chip is covered with the threaded circle. This is where you will put the resin in the next step, so be sure you have your suction tool in the right place. If it is not covered properly, you can take the suction tool off and try again. Check that the position is in the right place by looking from the inside of your car up at your windshield.
  3. Add Resin. Once your tool is in proper position, you can begin adding your resin. Add as much as the tube of resin suggests for your chip. Remove the suction tool once you've given the resin a minute to fill the chip.
  4. Apply Finishing Film. Place a thin piece of clear film over the top of your resin. This will help the resin stay in the damaged area and keep anything from getting stuck in the resin while it dries.
  5. Allow The Resin To Dry. Give the resin time to dry. Twenty minutes or so should be plenty of time. Pull off your finishing film and scrape off any excess resin using your razor blade.

The resin should fill in your chip enough to keep it from cracking or getting any bigger. If your chip becomes a bigger problem, contact a professional glass repair company to have your windshield repaired or replaced if necessary. Your windshield should not have any obstructions blocking your view, as this will make your vehicle unsafe for driving.
