You Can Learn How To Fix A Ding In Your Windshield

Posted on

When you are driving down the road and a rock gets thrown up on your windshield from another car it can be disconcerting. If you do have a chip in your windshield, you may be able to repair it on your own.

Repairing Your Own Windshield

If you are going to repair your windshield, there are some things that you need to think about first. If the chip has started to crack or spider, that it isn't something that you can handle on your own. The DIY kits aren't really equipped to do that. If the damage is a simple chip that is basically perpendicular to the windshield you will have the best chance of success.

What You Need

The first thing you are going to need is a repair kit. You should be able to find these in an automotive supply store. The kits will include a mixable resin, an injector, and some kind of curing film. The resin gets injected into the crack to fill it up. It will probably take more than you expect to fill it up. Don't worry about that, any excess can be removed before it sets. It's better to use a little too much than too little. Then you will put the film over the repair so that the resin cures correctly. You can't just put the resin in the crack and go. It takes time to firmly set and hold everything together.

When to Repair the Windshield

The best time to repair your windshield is when the weather is a comfortable temperature. If it is too hot, the resin may set too quickly, causing defects. If it's too cold, it may not set at all. If it is raining, the water can seep in around the resin and cause your windshield to de-laminate. Direct sunlight will also cause problems. If you have to do it outside, look for a shady spot to do the work. If you can do it inside, then you have a better chance of success. It's possible to control the variables on the inside. You want to get the repair done as quickly as possible because the longer you wait the more likely more damage is to occur.

If you feel like repairing your windshield is more than you can handle on your own, then you need to call a professional. Likewise, you need to have a professional if the chip is at an angle or there are any cracks. That may mean that your windshield needs replaced (by professionals, such as those from M S Glass Outlet) instead of repaired.
